Only From a Distance
Pick up one panel from the wall of the new medical centre at River Cree and you cannot tell what you are holding. Colour without a subject. It is exact, it is unrepeatable and there is precisely one place on that building where it belongs, and none of that is legible at arm's length. There are about 180 of them. The crew that hung them spent months on a ladder with a rivet gun, placing a photograph they were never in a position to see. It resolves for people who walk away.

Luke Taller got into this trade because of a rugby game. It was his final year at McNally, his best friend's dad was in the stands, and the job offer came on the walk off the field, on the grounds that anyone crazy enough to do that for free was worth watching do it for money. He wanted to be outside and he wanted to use his hands, so he took it, and the first thing he learned was cladding.
The company he ended up with: IMARK Architectural Metals. In 1995, Ted Sims, a fabricator and installer, and Barry Clark, a draftsman, opened a small shop in northwest Edmonton with a hand brake and a slitter and a conviction that the industry could be served better than it was being served, by a company that could design, fabricate, manage and install rather than hand the work off at every seam. They took the middle of one surname and the end of the other, and IMARK has carried both of them ever since without announcing either. Thirty years on, both founders are still part of the business, and Luke's read on that is not about longevity but about feel. It still runs like a family, in a company large enough to clad hospitals and arenas.
Even the name only works if you know where to stand. That turns out to be the rule for everything else in this episode.
The Road Feels Long at the Start
The facade at River Cree was supposed to be simpler than it became. The original design was a beadwork pattern, textile in nature and repeatable, straightforward to print across a run of panels. Then somebody decided repeatable was not right for this building or this Nation, and a single photograph replaced the pattern: beadwork, in colours that belong to the people of Enoch, running roughly 180 feet out to either side of the entrance.
That decision turned an ordinary cladding package into a job with no margin for error. The image had to survive being stretched across an entire elevation, which meant proving the file could take it before anyone priced anything, and the panel grid, which on most projects is the whole aesthetic argument, became a secondary concern because the photograph had to land where the photograph had to land. The layout went to the manufacturer in Austria and came back with every panel tagged and accounted for.
"There is one panel, there is one copy, there is one place for it."
There is no spare and no substitution, which means a panel installed one position off is not a small error. It is a hole in a photograph forty feet wide.
Luke is honest about how that feels on day one. You look at the render, then at the stack of panels where the image has not arrived yet, and the road feels long.
The Windows Came From the Inside Out
Look at the windows on that building and you will find almost no right angles, no parallel lines, and openings that decline to line up with one another, all of which reads as pure exterior expression. The shapes came from the other direction. That wing holds surgical suites, and surgical suites carry requirements that govern the size, the spacing and the placement of every opening, so what you are admiring outside is the clinical program resolved on the elevation. That is a hard thing to pull off, and the measure of how well it was done is that a visitor reads it as design rather than as constraint.
For the crews it meant a square panel grid meeting a building with very few straight references, which produces small triangles at every intersection and cut bottoms along the base. The fastening points were meant to be pre-drilled in the shop, and after enough iterations on where those points needed to sit against the angles of the windows and the brick, the call was made to drill the whole facade in the field. That was not a fallback. On a building where the reveal lines have to answer to the architecture rather than to the material yield, the field is where the truth is, so that is where the holes got made.
What Keeps the Building Alive Is Invisible
The same thing is true of the part of the wall nobody photographs, and here it stops being an observation about an image and starts being a line item.
A building breathes and sweats, loses heat and holds it, and Alberta Infrastructure projects now arrive with energy thresholds and LEED scoring attached that the mechanical equipment on the roof cannot reach on its own.
"You could have the most expensive equipment on the top of your roof, but if the envelope is not stable, that is where it becomes a bit of a problem."
The details that deliver that stability are small and profoundly unphotogenic. There is an air gap behind every panel so trapped moisture cannot warp the product, and there is exactly one fixed rivet per panel with every other hole drilled slightly oversized, so the panel can travel off that single anchor as the temperature runs its full Alberta range. Give it two fixed points and it fights itself until something lets go.
None of that appears in the photographs of the finished building, and all of it is why the building still performs in fifteen years.
The Line Nobody Can Price
Which brings up the problem everyone on a project team already knows about and nobody has solved. The exterior is where ambition is easiest to defer. Not because anyone wants to, but because the case for it cannot be put in the same units as the rest of the budget. A mechanical upgrade comes with a payback period. A facade that a community feels good about comes with nothing you can put in a column, and when the numbers tighten, the line without a number attached is the one under pressure.
Luke describes what his estimating team does as budget creativity, and that work starts long before a tender closes. Their job is to find the version of the design that is both buildable and affordable, which is the version that actually gets installed. He is clear about when that goes well and when it does not. It goes well when the trade is in the conversation early enough to shape how a feature gets built, while there is still room to adjust a panel size or a joint or a fastening approach and keep the intent whole.
He gives Enoch direct credit here, and the credit is worth repeating for any owner reading this. They knew exactly what they wanted on that facade, they held that position, and they understood what it was going to cost. Three things at once, from the client, is the reason that photograph is on the building.
A City Only Ever Meets a Building From a Distance
Drive home past any run of warehouses and one of them will hold your eye a second longer than the rest. Same footprint, same loading bays, and somebody spent a little more on the outside. The extra almost never covers a whole building. It goes into an entry, or one elevation facing the road, or a single element that changes how the entire structure reads on approach.
The trick does its most useful work on projects that arrive unwanted. One example that Luke highlights in this episode is a supportive housing build that uses alternating pipe screens in strong colours handle a job a plain guardrail could have handled. The neighbourhood had braced for an eyesore, but ended up with something it points out to visitors instead. Nothing about the building changed. The reception did.
Edmonton has been having this argument with itself for a generation. The verdict from outside was that this is a drab and functional place, built to survive a winter rather than to be looked at, and Luke's read is that quietly disagreeing with that assessment sits behind a good share of what has gone up here in the last decade. The schools are the evidence, and they look nothing like the schools he sat in. So does the NorQuest building across from the reVerb window, where the panel joints follow the shape of the building rather than the most efficient cut of a sheet, and the facade ends up looking like the students inside it.
For anyone who runs engagement on a public project, that should land hard. The first impression gets made without you, from across the street, before a word of the communications plan reaches anybody. The facade speaks first.
Get the Trade in the Room Early
The lesson here is about sequence, not design.
Every element on the River Cree Medical Centre that people now stop and photograph survived because the people who had to fabricate and install it were involved while decisions were still open. The manufacturer confirmed the image could hold across a full elevation before any panels were ordered. The panel grid was set against the window lines and the brick lines during layout rather than reconciled to them afterward. The fastening approach moved from shop drilling to field drilling as the geometry resolved, early enough to be a plan instead of a scramble.
Depending on whose contract you are reading, that is design assist, preconstruction input or early trade engagement. Luke's phrase for it is a holistic team, meaning somebody in the room who is accountable to the finished building rather than to their own scope. Where that happens, the ambitious version of a facade gets built. Where the trade arrives after the drawings are sealed, the ambitious version is what value engineering reaches for first, because it is the scope with the least defensible number attached, and nobody walking past the finished building will know it was ever on the page.
The best work on a facade goes unnoticed once it is finished. That is exactly why it has to be argued for at the start, by the people who can still see it.
